Interactive Journalism Final Report

Today is your last day of Interactive Journalism. You will be writing a report based on your experience:

Picture yourself as a journalist and write a report about what you have learned in this class since September.
Here are some questions to prompt you:
What new skills have you learned?
What does Interactive Journalism mean to you now?
How can you apply some of these skills to the rest of your life?

Please make sure grammar and punctuation make sense and are correct. This report will be part of your final grade for the class.

  1. Since this class first started in September I have learn a few new things. I have learned how to use FinalCut Express and just to be an all around better journalist. At first when I came into this class I just thought it was another writing assignment-type journalistic class but now I see it as more of a fun-type journalistic class with computers. I don't know how I would apply these skills in the career I would be going into but these seem like sum pretty helpful skills to have for computers in the future. But I did like this class overall rather than not.

I learned many new skills in this class. I learned how to use final cut and how to edit a video. Before this class I would have had no idea how to cut video footage. While making a video I also learned how to incorporate pictures video and music. The autobiography project taught me a lot.
Also I can recognize technique in documentaries. In the beginning of the year we spent a lot of time watching documentaries and analysing the technique.
Interactive journalism means incorporating interactive features to convey a point and tell information. Interactive features include pictures, videos, interactive time lines and more. Throughout this year we have seen many websites that are interactive. Before this class I would not have noticed an interactive site form a regular one.
I can apply these skills to real life by using my final cut skills to make more videos. These skills could help if I take an advanced media class or even at a future job. If I become a journalism they will help a lot. These skills also help me appreciate the hard work it takes to make a documentary or any video.

  3. As my time in Interactive Journalism comes to a close (already?) there are many things I have gained from this class. First and foremost I started my own blog, and learned how to research stories and communicate my opinions on the internet. My blog has been an outlet for me not only in this class but in my everyday life and I will try to continue managing it even though this class is over. Also, I learned how to use the Finalcut program to make my autobiography project. At first is was a struggle for me to get used to the technology but after a while I could integrate video footage, pictures, and music smoothly. In the future if I ever need to use the program again for a project I will have the knowledge and experience to pull it off. For me, this class has been a learning experience as well as a breath of fresh air compared to other electives offered at this school. I now know the power of the internet, the many ways people acquire their news, and all about the serious problems in the Gaza Strip. Overall signing up for this class has been beneficial and I will miss being here first period.

  4. A journalism class can be clichéd as a bunch of kids sitting around writing for a school newspaper or for classroom grades. Interactive Journalism was more than this though. This class stepped beyond the average journalism class, and introduced a video format to journalism students.
The Interactive Journalism class started out slow, introducing students to various outlets for their work, including news websites, video websites, and most prominently, blogs. Blogs led the pack of journalism outlets due to their availability to students, and ease. through the blogs the students presented their opinions, projects, and work.
The other majority of the class was spent on student autobiographies. The student autobiographies presented a number of skills to overcome for students. Voice work, camera work, editing, and their own personalities stood in the way of students wanting to present something that meant something. Students leapt over the obstacle of knowing themselves, to obtain better knowledge of the world and work around them.
Through the making of the biographies the students learned the ever necessary ability to manipulate and edit videos through final cut. This editing step was extremely important to students, because it really gives them endless possibilities with videos. The editing work was probably the biggest asset the students learned. -Keith

  5. When I saw "Interactive Journalism" on the paper of electives, I could not imagine what exactly it was. My interest in journalism and desire to learn new skills convinced me to take the class. The interesting part was that no one had ever heard about it and that made me even more curious to find out. I think I never looked at journalism the way I see it now-that there are so many different types of journalism and the Internet is a powerful tool for many journalists and it is also one of the few ways that information can be spread throughout the world in the middle of war. This class has helped me understand that technology is a very important part of being a journalist and that giving evidence and providing footage is much more effective in convincing the audience. I am very glad that I was able to learn the basics of Final Cut, but I am even more glad that the autobiography project taught me to look at myself in a different way and be able to explain my life in 5 minutes. I think a journalist must have the talent to be able to report stories that explain the whole situation. Interactive journalism has shown me the world beyond the one that I used see, and this class gave me experiences that I probably won't forget like taking the first interview and making my own video and blog. The way I imagined this class was very different than it really is and I am glad that in the future I will be able to know exactly which questions a journalist should ask and how to ask them. When I was little, my mother was a TV news reporter and I dreamed of being like her when I grew up. It felt like my childhood dream came true when I was reporting on the "Cast Lead" war in Gaza. This class has definitely taught me that it is important to be patient in any profession that you choose and the best way to approach any difficulty is to think that next time you will know exactly what to do. Thank you for your patience Ms.V.

Interactive Journalism! Well it's been quite an experience, when I entered this class in September I knew nothing about journalism. I was very excited to see what this class had to offer, it has its ups and downs but overall it was a great experience. I learned many new skills like video editing, I had already done some work with final cut in my freshman year but that was 2 years ago and I forgot a lot of what I learned. I also worked hands on with cameras, whether it was a little handheld camcorder or a professional film camera. My favorite part was actually going out in public with the cameras and filming the WHS football game with my friends. We got great footage and it was an excellent experience walking around and getting shots from all over the field. After doing all this video editing and camera work and speaking in front of the teleprompter I realized how much work you have to do to be a journalist or a have a career in the media field, but I really enjoyed it even though I wouldn't want to make a living off of it like I thought I wanted to in september. The skills I learned in Interactive Journalism I can also apply to real life situations, like in case I ever had to interview someone, I also found that the class helps with public speaking, you feel more comfortable speaking to large amounts of people. But the most useful skill I think was video editing, not that I plan to be an editor but I think video editing is so fun and I hopefully soon I can buy a video camera and make some of my own videos.

  7. On the last day of our Interactive Journalism class, it is time to look back on the year and think about what we have learned. We have learned many things about being a journalist and about the world of interactive media. I had no idea what a blog was before I took this class but now I have one and have written in it many times. Blogs play a big part in the lives of journalists. It is a great way to communicate information to others or finding out information for yourself. With or autobiography projects we learned how to make videos using Final Cut and That was probably the most enjoyable part of the class. We learned that to be a good journalist and to report about others, you first have to know yourself. With our final project, making the script about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, we learned a little more about the situation in that area, like the history and events leading up to the recent Operation "Cast Lead." When we read it out loud in front of the camera, that was pretty cool because that was the first time I had ever had to do anything on camera.

  8. As I take a look back on the past four months of Interactive Journalism, I start to remember everything that happened. At very beginning, we looked at blogs and commented at them. After we had an understanding of what a blog was, we created our very own blogs. Soon after, we stated to make our own autobiography project. Ms Ventura said that in order to report and interview others, you have to have to know yourself first. At the beginning of using Final Cut, I got really stressed out because I had no idea how to use it. But after working on it for weeks, I knew how to cut parts of the video, add pictures and videos, use transitions, add text and how to narrate and use voice over. Journalism is when you research and gather information on a certain topic and report on it. It's a hard task, but I had a fun time throughout the course of this class.
